La scelta delle dighe flessibili si è andata sempre più diffondendo, negli ultimi cinquant'anni, da quando il progresso tecnologico ha messo a punto materiali ad alte prestazioni chimico-fisiche-meccaniche.

Vengono realizzate a vari scopi:

  • per la produzione di energia idroelettrica, anche per sfruttare corsi d'acqua in cui non esiste salto naturale sufficiente al funzionamento delle turbine
  • per creare prese laterali e/o dervazioni
  • per aumentare la disponibilità di acqua nei canali di irrigazione come sul Canale Cavour
  • per impedire la risalita di acqua di mare nel corso di fiumi
  • per creare barriere antiesondazione un esempio è la protezione che abbiamo realizzato a Codigoro sul Po di Volano 

Perchè sceglierle? Non possono confrontarsi con gli sbarramenti fissi in calcestruzzo che rispondono ad esigenze tradizionali di bacinizzazione, ma diventano utili, necessarie se non indispensabili, quando si presentano soprattutto queste 4 situazioni:

  1. quando è necessaria un'ampia regolazione del corso d'acqua
  2. quando il corso d'acqua è soggetto a piene 
  3. quando il corso d'acqua ha carattere torrentizio, come la diga di tipo Hard top che abbiamo realizzato sull'Agogna
  4. quando nel corso d'acqua esiste un significativo trasporto di corpi di fondo e/o materiale galleggiante, come quella che abbiamo realizzato in Cile

The new Eataly store, which has opened in Trieste, has eliminated the risk of flooding by means of H.A.B Srl's automatic flood protection barriers.

On 17 January 2017, the new Eataly store opened on Riva Tommaso Gulli 1, Trieste, in the historic Magazzino Vini (wine warehouse). The architectural refurbishment was curated by Studio Archea in Florence, with design by Florentine architect Marco Casamonti.

The automatic Hydro Air Bank anti-flooding systems were chosen in order to provide complete protection of the building and the underground car parks.

This type of flood protection barrier has been used all over Italy since 1997, and it represents a secure, definitive solution to flooding risks. It completely eliminates architectural barriers, and it guarantees a minimal impact both on the environment and on the historic building's architectural quality.

H.A.B. automatic flood barrier systems operate in a completely automatic mode, even in the total absence of electric power.

The flood barriers are specifically designed for the location, and are sunk into the flooring. They take up very little space, and are activated by an inflatable lifting (rubberdam) envelope using air or water. Therefore no pollutants are used in these plants.

In this specific instance, five barriers were placed at all the building's pedestrian entrances, with another at the head of the ramp leading down to Eataly's underground car parks, guaranteeing total flood protection for all the basement and ground floor areas of the brand-new "Temple of Italian food and wine excellence."

Saltwater barrier dams

We construct barrier systems that prevent saltwater from moving up a river. If saltwater penetrates upstream from a river estuary, it can prevent the use of the river water for irrigation. A flexible dam (rubberdams) is one of the few solutions making it possible to tackle the problem without creating permanent structures which would hinder navigation and increase the danger of flooding during period of high water and surge.

Rubberdam

As its name suggests, Rubberdam is a flood protection barrier made in rubber, used on rivers liable to floods. Its characteristic is that is lowers automatically when the flood surge arrives, so that the river does not burst its banks.

This barrier consists of a tubular element anchored to the terrain. When it is empty, the container lies on the bed of the water course, without obstructing water flow. When it is filled by pumping water or air into the container, the tube inflates to complete rigidity, creating the desired barrier. Rubberdams can be installed in a single span, or by multiple spans to subdivide the volume of water flowing through the system of barriers.

Their height is normally between 50 cm and 4 metres (the upper limit is determined by the strength of the rubberized textiles currently available on the market). However, by using rubberized textiles made using special rubber mixes, dams as high as 6 metres have been installed.

Inflatable barriers

We design, manufacture and assemble permanent inflatable barriers of various types, with a metal protective shield – the Hard-Top – or in rubber alone, Rubberdam, for channelling or diverting water, for work on a river bed or for draining a canal; temporary inflatable barriers that can be used, for example, to isolate part of a river where water has to be drained off in order to perform work.
